Literature Text

Thump, Thump, Thump

Do you not hear it?
I’m sure it is nothing,
Just a particular thumping
That creeps under my floor

Under the stained brown carpet
I hear it every night

Thump . . . Thump

I feel the heart inside my chest
Gain ten more pounds in weight
As my sins weigh on my chest,
My shame and guilt
O my heart!

. . . Thump . . .

Leave me alone!
I have not wronged anyone
Only myself
Myself who I have betrayed
I fear to look of what I have become

Thump!

I cannot take it anymore!
Leave me be!
Be gone
My own hideous heart!

I have to admit I like certain works of Edger Allen Poe, I remembered reading The Tell-Tale Heart in seventh grade and it flew over my head, I honestly didn't get a word of it. I do understand it now, and even though I don't have a guilty conscious I live in a second story apartment building and the guy below me likes to play is bass guitar at night and for some reason it always reminded me of this tale.

And granted I never murdered anyone, I can't deny the feeling it sometimes puts on my heart like I should be guilty for something.

Anyway this is my own poem inspired by Poe, I hope you like it.

Very interesting take on a Poe classic...
